Description:
Due to the rapid increase in the use of mobile technology such as mobile phones, PDAs, tablet PCs, and hand held computers educators must start to examine how to use mobile technology as a delivery tool. Mobile devices are being used for communication between individuals and to conduct everyday business. In the near future, learners and citizens of the world will demand access to learning materials using mobile technology.
When designed properly, learning materials can be delivered on a variety of mobile devices to allow students to learn and access course materials from anywhere and at anytime. As a result, educators will have to design and develop courses for delivery on these devices in addition to providing support to learners using these same technologies. This seminar will describe the benefits of mobile learning and will provide guidelines on how to design learning materials for delivery on mobile technology.
The presenter, Dr Mohamed Ally, will also discuss some of the challenges educators could face when moving to mobile learning and he will present results from a recent study. Finally there will be an opportunity to discuss how mobile technology can be used in different scenarios and what further research should be conducted in this area.
The presenter, from Athabasca University in Canada, is working with the Centre for Distance Education during November 2006. Mohamed is Associate Professor in the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca, “Canada ’s Open University”. Mohamed has wide-ranging interests in distance and e-learning and specialist expertise in mobile-learning (he is one of the organisers of the 4th m-learn conference in Banff, Canada ). In a busy schedule with the CDE he will be presenting two seminars, this one and one on “Learner Support” (23 November). The intention is also to explore areas for research collaboration, and to advise the External System on the implementation of xml-based course authoring.
