Description:

The University of London is committed to ‘providing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in a world-class research environment’. This research focus encompasses the way we teach as well as the content of our teaching.

Aspects of distance teaching are a new and growing area for research in the University.   At least one in five of the University’s students is a distance learner, and the proportion is expected to grow rapidly with the adoption of flexible and blended provision in response to demographic change and the continued introduction of new learning technologies.

This conference will focus on three key areas for research development, showcasing current research projects within the Colleges and identifying emerging areas for further research.

Communication, collaboration and emerging technologies
Using existing and emerging technologies to support collaborative distance learning - for example, virtual classrooms, weblogs and m-learning.

Resources for teaching and learning
Exploring the changing role of information services in distance and online learning - for example, online libraries; support for teachers and tutors who are teaching at a distance; peer support; information literacy.

Assessment for learning
Modes of assessment in distance learning; evaluating distance learning programmes for quality management and enhancement

The conference will combine keynote inputs from national experts with presentations and workshops led by researchers within the University. The evening reception will feature current research projects supported by the Centre for Distance Education and offer a networking opportunity for researchers, programme developers, tutors and managers to join and contribute to the emerging community of practice in this area. The reception will also include announcement of the 2006-7 Teaching and Research Awards..
