The 2008/9 CDE conference took place on 9 February 2009 at the Brunei Centre [external link], SOAS with the theme of Research in Distance Education: from present findings to future agendas.
Since 2005 the University of London External System has actively promoted research and scholarship in distance education alongside the development and delivery of programmes. Its Teaching and Research Awards Scheme has funded more than forty projects and is probably the largest institutional research programme in this field at the present time. The Awards scheme is characterised by its multi-disciplinary nature, engaging researchers from the arts, social and natural sciences, medicine and the humanities, most of whom are also distance-learning practitioners working in the External System or in other distance learning programmes within the in the University of London.
The conference explored the latest outputs from the research, considering the lessons from all of the research projects for teaching practice and programme design, contributing to identifying research priorities as the External System moves beyond its 150th anniversary. Eighteen recent projects were presented within three strands - ‘Design for learning’, ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Evaluation and Assessment’ - with a focus on implications for practice and for research. The presenters were listed below. Poster sessions provided information about these and other research projects in this area, funded by the External System under the Teaching and Research Awards Programme.
