Accessibility

The University of London is in the process of implementing globally recognised web standards for accessibility. The Centre for Distance Education site is built in conformance with the W3 Hypertext Mark-up Language (XHTML) 1.0.

In addition to the W3 prescriptions for Web accessibility, we have endeavoured to implement the following standards:

  • Standardised architecture - consistent page layout and colours.
  • Site layout - the site layout has been designed and tested to be intuitive.
  • Alternative navigation - navigational alternatives are provided, including side navigation menus, breadcrumb trails and a site map.
  • Search - the site includes a search facility, making information easier to find.
  • Graphics - the size and number of graphics has been limited.
  • Page length - where appropriate page length has been limited to three 'page down' keystrokes.
  • Scalable text - to allow users to increase the size of the text using their browser options.

Forthcoming accessibility developments

In the near future, we intend to implement the following accessibility features:

W3 WAI Level-A Conformance - we aim to achieve W3 WAI Level-A conformance and where possible, W3 Level Double-A conformance.

Accessibility is an ongoing and complex issue. We welcome any comments or suggestions about our web accessibility initiative. If you experience any accessibility problems specific to this site please contact the CDE Administrator.
